Global Hydronics Heat Values Of Coal

The type of coal burned in a furnace is similar to burning wood in that the softer the coal the less heat you will produce and the more coal you will need to heat your buildings.

Lignite coal is a young coal and is very soft with high ash content as compared to hard anthracite coal with very little ash residue. As with wood, coal can have high moisture content and affect the combustion efficiency greatly.

Type Grade BTU's Per  Pound
Lignite Coal Lowest grade of coal 6,300 to 8,300
Subbituminous Coal Mid range 8,300 to 11,500
Anthracite Coal High carbon 11,500 to 16,000
